About the Challenge me to Challenges [PLEASE READ]

Concept

The "Challenge me to..." challenges are now a stable part of the LivingSims forums and have been for some time.

The idea is that we challenge each other individually to be better decorators/builders/gardeners in game.

Process
Person A asks for a challenge. Person B gives him/her a challenge, that fits their stated game and skill level. Person A chooses if they want to accept the challenge. If Person A accepts, then (s)he will state that and start working on the challenge. Once person A is finished, (s)he posts the response to the challenge in the topic. It is a good idea to link or quote (without pictures) the original challenge.
If person A does not accept person B's challenge, then person C will challenge person A again.

You can enter as many times as you want times, but you have to finish your first challenge before you may ask for the second one.

Anyone may challenge anyone (that asked for a challenge).

Challenging someone

Here is a list of things to consider then you challenge someone:
  • The challenge should be doable in an afternoon. Do not challenge someone to do a huge lot or a very very complex design.
  • Do not challenge someone to something in a way that they will need to go out and download 500 things to do the challenge.
  • Try to let different people challenge people, so you don't always end up challenging the same person.
  • Keep in mind that your challenge should fit the person you challenge's skill level and the game they work in.
  • If you know the person or the person's style it can be really fun to do something personal.
E.g. I know that one of our members always uses the same fridge so I challenged her to do a kitchen without that fridge OR I know that a member's sister had had a bad day, so I challenged him to do a room for his sister.

Your challenge can be based on:
  • Just an idea or a concept e.g. Build a kids room that uses pink, Build something like a house based on the concept of Air.
  • An image you found somewhere, either of a room or of something else. If you base a challenge on an image, you can either ask people to take inspiration from it or recreate it (see above)
  • A Sim or a family. It is fun to build for specific people sometimes, take a picture of some Sims, find some online or find a EA created Sim to base the challenge on.
  • A layout: It can be fun to see if you can build a room/house or a garden from a layout. If you base your challenge on a layout, provide only the layout.
  • A house or Sim from the challenge toolbox

Also remember that it must be fun to do the challenge

Being challenged
  • Make sure to state which game you have and what your skill level is (see below).
  • You have 1 month to finish a challenge. Don't ask for a challenge if you know you will not have time to do it before that. However if something comes up during the month, you are allowed to ask for a (2 week) extension.
  • You always have the right to turn down a challenge, if you don't feel inspired by it, but don't turn it down because you think you can't do it - give it a try.
  • When you take up a challenge, give it your best shot in the time you have to do it in. Please spend more then an hour on it (unless of course that is part of the challenge). See how good you can get it.
  • If you don't know the style you have been challenged to do, research a bit. google
  • You may only post 10 pictures in the topic, but you are welcome to link to an album with more or show them elsewhere on the forum.
  • Try to show an overview picture of your room/house/garden.

Vocabulary

Here are a few key phrases so you know what people that challenge you mean:
  • Inspiration: When people ask you to use an image as inspiration, they ask you to base your challenge on the same style, colours or mood as the image they provided has. You are not asked to re-create the room/house in the picture.
  • Re-create: When you are asked to re-create a room/house, you are asked to build the room/house/garden that looks as much like the original image as possible.

Extensions

You always have one month (30 days) to finish your challenge. If you can not make it in time, then you can ask for an extension.

You can get an extension by asking for more time in the topic. An extension is 14 days.

If you for some reason you can not finish your challenge within that time frame, then it will be removed from the list on the first page. If you finished it after that, you are very welcome to share the pictures in our Sims [x] Picture forums.

Pictures
  • More pictures
In these challenges, you may show up to 10 pictures. You should take advantage of this and show us more then a few shots of your room. These challenges are a good chance to practice your picture taking skills as well.
  • Overview
It is always a good idea to include an overview of the room/house/garden you make. Take it from above looking down on the room(s). The overviews give us an idea of what the layout of the room/house/garden and that is often hard to see from the individual pictures.
  • Detail shots
If you worked hard on getting a part of the room just right, make sure to photograph it. Go closer to this area and zoom in a bit.
  • Picture Size
Pictures should be no more than 800 pixels wide.

Want feedback, let Heidy help Heidy

On the forum we have a little furry friend named Heidy, Heidy - she is our little friendly squirrel who will ask for feedback for you.

If you want in-depth feedback on your picture and the interior/exterior design in your pictures, then please just post the Heidy smiley Heidy and other members will try to give you a bit more feedback including constructive criticism. Leave her out and we will most likely not criticize as much.

Skill level
In the Challenge Me To challenges we ask you to state what skill level you are.

Grasshopper:
You have not been decorating for long. You find it hard to pick good colours, what style to use or figure out what kind of furniture that goes together. Your rooms often end up looking too bare or too cluttered. You feel really unsure when it comes to taking pictures of the room.

Sparrow:
You are slowly picking up the skills and are getting better and better, the sight of being an Intermediate is at the horizon and you're confident you're gonna get there. You put colours together and know how to match the room with a personality. You still don't like to mess around with a style you do not know well. Your pictures are improving. You're not afraid to get a little bit more challenged.

Owl:
You got the hang of most of the above. You feel pretty much at home decorating stuff, but there is still at lot of advanced techniques you don't have a handle on. You take good pictures most of the time. You might be getting really good at one or two styles but know you have a harder time then you get pushed out of your comfort zone.

Eagle:
You got the hang of most of the above. You like taking the Sims personality in to account. And you like to experimenting with mixing styles or colours. It doesn't always turn out fantastic but it is fun to play with it. You use cheats on a regular basic. You do not want to build yet another sub-urban house today. You like a good challenge.

Pterosaurs:
You know how to handle most of the above. You know how to make many style and colour combos look good. You are looking for things that will push you out of your comfort zone. Perhaps you don't want to do yet another beach house. You have a handle on at least some advanced techniques. You are pretty much open for any kind of challenge and you think it is fun.
