Help with a roof & chimney
#1
Hi, I'm attempting to build a house from a floor plan and picture I found on an architecture site.

This is the picture I'm using:

I'm having trouble with the roof. I'm not even sure if it's possible. This is what I have so far:
I've tried all the roofs and none seem to work. Saying that, I'm very new to building and unfamiliar with all the roof techniques. I have had a look around and tried to google it, but no luck so far.

And also the grey stone wall is supposed to hold a fireplace, but when I try to add one, this happens:

And I just can't figure out how to make it look nice.

Any help at all would be much appreciated. I've been lurking this forum for a while and I'm constantly amazed by the beauty and creativity I see here.

If you turn "moveobjects on" in the cheat window you can delete the chimney without deleting the fireplace and make a fake chimney using the wall tool - I do that all the time

As for the roof... no, it's not possible to make one exactly like that one, unfortunately. You'll have to find a suitable compromise. The fact that it's an angled roof will add to the difficulties, too, visually speaking. You might be able to do the diagonal gable roof and still have room for the windows, if you raise the angle to the correct height? I dunno, I'm tying to picture the result in my head, and know it will be a compromise, but I'm not sure how it will look.

Do let us know what you decide on, i want to see it! Smile

There are some articles in older LivingSims magazines regarding roofs that might also be helpful:

Thanks for the suggestions!

@macthecat I will do that, thanks.

@oumamea Thanks, they're really interesting.

@Jaguwar I wasn't sure how to adjust the angles, and I tried a bunch of things but decided I needed to get rid of the 2nd storey windows. Even so, it still looks ugly. This is what I have now:

I was looking into making the diagonal part flat and transparent, like a glass ceiling / conservatory but I couldn't find a diagonal part and it also just looked odd.

Hmm ... that original pic looks like an effect I had (unwanted) when I tried to build a house with a second 'shortened' second floor. I used the 'constrainFloorElevation [true/false]' cheat to make the roof rise and dip and perhaps you can create the same effect in the pic with that cheat.

Make an indention into the floor in front of the building where the roof should be dipping. Built a four walled mini room in there, put another second floor on top. Use the cheat with false and then use the level terrain tool and level from your secondary structure towards the second floor where the roof should be dipping. It 'should' create an angle with the roof. I will try it out tonight, if it works or not. But in theory it should.
